🎖️ Sir John Monash
John Monash was born in West Melbourne in 1865, the eldest child of German Jewish parents. His family later moved to Jerilderie, and education, engineering and military service carried him well beyond the suburb. As a commander in the First World War he became one of Australia's most prominent public figures. His civilian career was substantial too, particularly his leadership of Victoria's State Electricity Commission after the war. The West Melbourne birthplace belongs to the earliest chapter of a life combining technical training, organisational ability and responsibilities on a national scale.
🏛️ Arthur Calwell
Arthur Calwell was born in West Melbourne in 1896 and entered public service as a young clerk before a long parliamentary career. Appointed Australia's first immigration minister in 1945, he helped organise the substantial postwar migration programme, including recruitment from displaced-persons camps in Europe. That expansion coexisted with his defence of the racially restrictive White Australia policy, an important limitation of the programme he promoted. He later led the federal Labor Party. His birthplace gives the suburb a direct connection with a consequential and complicated chapter in Australia's migration history.
